60sec Tip Bits #4 – Cymbal Sizzler
60Sec Tip Bits #4 – Cymbal Sizzler. Whether you’re a seasoned Jazz pro or merely a drummer/percussionist looking for alternative cymbal sounds, in this video you will see how to make a cymbal sizzler with little effort. Just a plain ol’ plug chain will do and it’s a cheaper alternative to some of the very good, but expensive drum manufacturer options that’ll (effectively) do they same thing.
Construction
So once you’ve purchased your plug chain either; on line or from a shop, the construction of your cymbal sizzler couldn’t be easier. You’ll need to remove one of the loop-hole ends – easily done with a pair of pliers and THAT’S IT! Then simply place the remaining loop-hole end over the thread of your cymbal stand and let the chain rest on the cymbal. Furthermore you can rest the loop-hole on a felt and still attach the wingnut to the cymbal stand if you so wish.
Dirt Cheap Cymbal Sizzler
This is a dirt cheap cymbal sizzler. For example, you can find a plug chain for £1.99 on line. So why not buy several? Amend them accordingly and leave them in your; stick bag, hardware case, drum case or cymbal bag. You’ll never know when they’ll come in handy and you’ll never be caught short should it be needed. Heck, even if they break, they’re so cheap and easy to make, they’ll still be cheaper their drum manufacturer counterparts!
Notable Mentions
There are other notable mentions. The obvious one being get small holes drilled into your cymbal and have ACTUAL sizzlers/rivets put in. Thusly freeing yourself from the dangling string-of-metal-balls that can get in the way. Alternatively, you can tape a coin to the underside (or topside) or your cymbal, not too tightly but enough to hold the coin in place. This allows the coin to vibrate on the surface of the cymbal creating that ‘sizzle sound’.
