60sec Tip Bits #2 – Cymbal Sleeves
60sec Tip Bits #2 – Cymbal Sleeves. Remember that sinking feeling you get when you show up to a gig only to find there are no cymbal sleeves on the house cymbal stands!?! Not to mention that rehearsal space that’s seen better days…. As drummers we’ve all been there at some point BUT do not despair, there’s an easy solution to this problem!
Cymbal Sleeves and Felts
Buy yourself some cymbal sleeves and felts. It’s that easy. Opt for the 8mm width, ‘long sleeved’ version as they’ll fit on most cymbal stands. Then, you leave them in your cymbal bag or stick bag. Should you find yourself in the predicament of sleeveless cymbal stands again, you’ll always be covered. Having sets of these handy has prevented any keyholing of my cymbals on many an occasion. So, it will also save yours!
If you’re the type of player that likes to stack cymbals or even have them screwed on tight, then just add some wing nuts (8mm & 6mm – just in case) with extra felts. It’ll be a worthwhile investment and you’ll be glad you did.
Gibraltar Cymbal Sleeves and Felts
Although there will be other options out there, you’ll find the Gibraltar cymbal sleeve pack and Gibraltar felts pack do the job perfectly. The 2.2inch/5cm length will snugly fit the majority of cymbal stands. They’ll also leave you enough head room (once you’ve added the felt) for your cymbal not to touch any metal of the stand.
These are also a great idea, should you want to purchase something for your drummer.
Gaffa Tape
If you don’t have any cymbal sleeves or felts you can always use Gaffa Tape. This is really a must-have for any musician – especially drummers. Gaffa tape’s usefulness is demonstrated in the bonus section of my video above.
There are many, many, many other uses for Gaffa tape. So do yourself a favour and purchase a roll or several. Again, you’ll be glad you did.
60 Second Tip Bits
Time is precious as everyone is busy these days. As a result, you can find a series of short videos on my youtube channel giving some tips on drumming called 60 Second Tip Bits. There will be many pitfalls and hurdles you’ll come across on your drumming journey. That said, once prepared you’ll be ensuring yourself a relatively easy time of it. Forewarned is forearmed as they say.
If you wanna check out the rest of the series, check out the other posts in my blog section.
